I think a character in one of Agatha Christie's books once claimed "with the right sort of circumstance, anyone can be a killer" (i.e. opportunity, love, money, desperation, hate,... or even a combination of the lot)
I'm not saying I completely agree with that saying, I just think it shows people (even "good" people) have a variety of reasons to cross moral lines. For the alchemist, it seems to be desperation and love...

I'm not sure if I'd believe him, but sometimes desperate circumstances will make you convince yourself.
